"Hence, and long before the Internet and social networking:
The business of business is relationships.
The essence of effective business is effective relationships.
The R.O.I. (Return on Investment) that truly matters is...R.O.I.R.
Return on Investment in Relationships." -- Tom Peters
Our relationships are...everything. Period.
Too often we obsess about the numbers and that's fine (if that's your thing), but it's the depth, meaning and love we have for one another that truly matters.
Take something as anodyne as networking. If we did something without any expectation but just to connect, be useful and help others, then the rest would take care of itself.
There's no give to get. It's all about mutual love for the moment -- the eternal joy that comes from renewing the connection -- or developing something new, original and life-affirming.
Stop focusing on the numbers, the volume of content and what you're selling. Focus on being useful. That's it.
Never take anything for granted. We certainly don't need fancy titles or material wealth to impress or be thought better than we are. We just need to share our love and share in each and every beautiful moment. Yes, not everything's made this way; but there's still immense power in connection, even the type that may leave us wounded (as Andrew Solomon says in his wonderful TED talk, perhaps it's times like this that we "Forge meaning. Build identity").
Not all of us are blessed with open spaces, but there's always great wisdom to be had by staying close to mother earth -- the soil, the animals, the environment. It's not about reverie, it's about letting go, and collapsing into the moment...this glorious moment.
Our higher Self
Perhaps it's the world we live in where our work disconnects us from our true self, but if we want to make a choice which world we habit -- the true, God-like one or the shadow life -- we've no choice but to connect with our higher Self. It's too easy to become lost in the business of work, but that will never lift the veil. Only deep soul work will enable you to connect...much deeper than you ever thought possible. (And for the avoidance of doubt, this isn't some happiness jaunt. This is serious, serious work.)
Make that your life's work.
