Why social media?

Is social media part of you?

Or, are you merely doing it to get something - money, prizes and recognition?

Social media shouldn't be seen through any one lens. In essence, it's a way to connect people who share a similar purpose or mission. (When we talk of the connection economy, it's not just an economic economy that we mean - or at least that's what I think.)

It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few years, but one thing I remain convinced of is the need for us to see the bigger picture - mobilising a movement, helping a community reconnect or facing down the increasingly depressing environmental challenges. If social media gets hemmed in by the sales 'ticket' then frankly its place will be consigned to history like most things where greed and ego share the space.

If you still question the need for (constant) connection and the lack of privacy, I see that as a small price to pay for the greater good. And, in any event, we are on this planet for such a short time, I'm really not that bothered by the constant privacy debate save of course where my family is put at risk.

It's not my business or intention to turn you one way or the other, but if you care about something or somebody then perhaps social media is the only way to truly make a difference.

Why social media?

Never stop asking that question.
